Solution for MS Word – This document could not be registered Error

I’ve upgraded PC recently and reinstalled OS and stuff. Since then every time I open MS Word (desperately tried both 2007 and old 2003), I get this message: “This document could not be registered. It will not be possible to create links from other documents to this document.” Monitoring system error logs didn’t expose anything; searching forums returned some registry-related fixes which apparently wasn’t helpful. Well, long story short – it was different class of problem. Microsoft Word relied on a number or system services. I used to disable all irrelevant (in my humble opinion) Windows services to make PC a bit faster, and it turns out that some them were essential for Word operation. Well, I’ve learned that Microsoft Word lesson and going to share another better solution with you

Solution:

Good idea is to scan your system with good Antispyware / antivirus software and fix system errors with this tool, as it will save you from many annoying problems.

You need to check and make sure following services are running:

  • Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
  • DCOM Server Process Launcher
  • Protected Storage

Required actions to fix the problem:

  1. Click Start > Run and type services.msc
  2. Double-click each service from above list
  3. Set its startup type to Automatic
  4. Restart the computer

If you feel lost with brand new Office interface, consider attending Microsoft Word course.
